Lock solutions in parenteral nutrition
Central venous access is needed for the supply of the nutrient solution in the field of parenteral nutrition. Residual nutrient solution promotes the development of a biofilm and increases the risk of catheter infections. Moreover, contact with blood, in particular at the tip of the catheter, increases the risk of catheter occlusion and ensuing reduced patency.
Accordingly, lock solutions must meet the following requirements:
